A THOUSAND CUTS.....

Updated: Nov 3, 2023

(A Thousand Cuts - translated from Malayalam) is the gripping autobiography of Prof. T.J.Joseph, former Head of the Department, Malayalam at Newman College, Thodupuzha Kerala. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is a definite one-sit read. It deals with the extraordinary story of a humble professor who framed a question in an internal exam only to be falsely charged with blasphemy. A question that was misinterpreted by religious fanatics in one of the most literate states which boasts of its secularism led the professor to pay the price in terms of his right palm, his beloved wife and a stellar academic career. He speaks about how the church, state government and police maltreated him. Professor takes the reader through intense emotions while he narrates his hardships. He, who is aware of the technical aspects of a literary work has used them to their full potential so that readers get immersed throughout the book.

The second part is slow-paced where he honestly narrates about his life before the scandal. The book becomes relatable to a reader as it succinctly portrays the thought process and lives of people and reflection of the society.
